X-wing

Sometimes referred to as the snub fighter, the Incom T-65C A2 X-wing became the symbol of the rebellion after the Battle of Yavin. The X-wing prototypes fell into Alliance hands after the design staff of Incom Corporation joined the Rebellion, bringing their latest plans with them. Although it is not the best armoured or the fastest ship around, the X-wing remains the most well-rounded and practical starfighter design in use. The armament of the X-wing consists of two Krupx MG7 Proton Torpedo Launchers mounted internally and four Taim & Bak IX4 Laser Cannons mounted on the tip of the s-foils. In normal flight with the s-foils closed flat, the outline of the starfighter strongly resembles the Z-95 Headhunter from which the X-wing was derived. In attack position, the s-foils open into the distinctive cross position that gave the starfighter its name. This also spreads out the fire of the cannons providing more chance of scoring a hit and also provides excellent stability when flying in an atmosphere - something that gives X-wings a distinct edge over the TIE series in atmospheric combat. For defence the X-wing is fitted with forward / rear projecting Chempat shields and is also fast and highly manoeuvrable, making it an excellent space superiority fighter. However with a hyperdrive capability, it is also well suited to the convoy protection role and its proton torpedoes mean that it is a threat to capital ships (and on two occasions to well protected battle stations!). To aid the single pilot, there is a recessed socket for an R2 astromech droid who provides hyperspace jump co-ordinates, assists in damage control and provides the pilot with an analysis of the sensor readouts - drawing attention to important details while filtering out unnecessary data. Pilots of the famous Rogue Squadron (created from the survivors of the Death Star Trench Run after the Battle of Yavin) use this starfighter, shunning more recent ships in favour of the X-wing.

A-Wing

The RZ-1 A-wing Starfighter was developed secretly during the early days of the Rebellion by General Dodonna (the planner of the Death Star Assault at the Battle of Yavin) and was manufactured by Blissex. The A-wing made its first appearance late in the civil war. Designed for high speed and manoeuvrability, the ship was introduced as an escort and as a space-superiority fighter on a par with the TIE Interceptor. To this end the craft was fitted with an excellent sensor and communications countermeasures package. It also had a power-jamming package that was used to blind craft before it strikes. However after a few poor showings as an escort, the crafts role was switched to hit-and-fade operations. Armament consists of two wing-mounted pivoting Borstel RG9 Blaster Cannons and two Dymek HM-6 Concussion Missile Launchers. Defensively it has forward / rear projecting Sirplex Z-9 light combat shields.

Y-Wing

The BTL-A4 Y-wing Starfighter was a two-seater fighter / bomber manufactured by Koensayr and is one of the oldest ships used by the Alliance. It is armed with two forward mounted Taim & Bak KX5 Laser Cannons, a rear mounted twin ArMek SW-4 Ion Cannon and two Arakyd Flex Tube Proton Torpedo Launchers. The Y-wing is a slow and fairly sluggish ship, but it has strong forward / rear projecting Chempat Shields and thick armour that allow the starfighter to absorb a lot of damage before systems begin to fail. Like many Alliance starfighters, the Y-wing has a socket for an astromech droid to aid with navigation, sensor readouts and damage control.

B-Wing

In response to the success of Imperial Escort Shuttle, Admiral Ackbar, with the aid of the Verpine colonies of Slayn and Korpil, conceived and headed the Shantipole Project to create a new starfighter. Out of this project was borne the Slayn & Korpil B-wing Assault Starfighter. Designed to combine speed with armour and armament, the B-wing sports three ArMek SW-7a Ion Cannons, one mounted on the primary wingtip and one each on the two s-foils. The cockpit has a Gyrhil R-9X Laser Cannon and there are also two internal Krupx MG9 Proton Torpedo Launchers and two smaller blaster cannons. For defence, there are forward / rear projecting Sirplex Zr-41 Shields and a thick Titanium alloy hull. The two movable s-foils form a cross mid-way between the command pod and the primary wingtip. When in attack position they are fully extended to allow the full firepower of the starfighter to bear. When cruising or landing, the s-foils tuck into the primary airfoil. Originally designed without a hyperdrive, the B-wing was adapted for hyperspace travel shortly before the Battle of Endor.

Planets

The rebel base on Hoth

Despite its extreme cold, Hoth was chosen to become a Rebel base because of the planet's remoteness and tactical insignificance to the Imperial Navy. The asteroid belt near the planet also served as a deterrent to spacecraft, masking routine activities at Echo Base. Though temperatures are tolerable for humans in the daytime, shelter is necessary for survival at night. Machinery and equipment are also affected by the extreme cold, and had to be adapted by Alliance engineers.

The Planet of Mon Calamari

For the Empire, slavery and racism were standard operating procedure. When they attemted to take the watery world of Mon Calamari and capture one of its leaders, Ackbar, they learned that sometimes procedure just won't work. The planet was almost entirely covered by water, and its two main species had coped with survival in different ways. The Mon Calamari, who had adopted the name of their world and who were air breathers who built tremendous floating cities, while the Quarren were largely water breathers, and prefferd to live in the ocean depths. Ackbar was a peaceful man, content to lead the citizens of Mon Calamari's Coral City.Over time, the Mon Calamari made contact with the Quarren, and the two species began a symbolic relationship. The Quarren mined the deep sea ores on the planet, whle the Calamari created the civilization's floating cities. Each city had multiple levels, extending both above and below water. The Quarren lived in the lower levels, and the Calamari lived above. While the Quarren swam to move around the planet, the Calamari used wavespeeders to get from city to city, and submersible devices to explore the oceans. For millennia, the Mon Calamari and Quarren lived peaceful lives. The Calamari developed a highly evolved and civilized culture. Their art, music, literature, and science were all important to them; they eventually developed space travel to explore new worlds and make friends with the other civilizations, as they had done with the Quarren. Floating space platforms and spaceship facilities orbited the planet, mirroring life on the surface below.

The first time a Mon Calamari ship met an Imperial ship, the Calamari made overtures of peace and free trade, but the Imperials were mere interested in slaves and Mon Calamari technology. They began an invasion, and when the peaceful people protested, Emperor Palpatine ordered the destruction of three of their floting cities. The Emperor wanted to send a clear message across the galaxy as to the fate of all those who opposed his New Order, especially the "inferior" alien species. The plan backfired. The Mon Calamari began using their technology to create weaponry and battleships. The main Mon Calamari star cruisers were handcrafted by dedicated technicians and engineers. Most had originally been space liners that were converted into combat starships. Their cylindrical shapes were covered by pads, bulges, and bumps, all of them containing some essential element. The cruisers looked more organic than mechanical, allowing the Calamari to turn their weapons of war into works of art. They eventually drove the Empire away, but of great cost to their cities and leadership. The Mon Calamari joined the rebellion against the Empire and helped the alliance to crush the empire.

Caracters

Admiral Ackbar

Ackbar had been one of the first Mon Calamari enslaved by the Empire. He was initially taken to be an interpreter and personal servant for a fleet officer on a flagship. Soon after, he was presented as a gift to Grand Moff Tarkin, who was in charge of Oversector Outer, which included almost all of the Outer Rim Temibries. Tarkin reported only to the Emperor.Playing the role of a dutiful slave, Ackbar was able to learn about the Empire and its military, from basic command structures to its battle tactics. He studied secret military documents and listened to Tarkin's theories on war and his "rule by fear" doctrine. Ackbar also learned of a Rebellion against the Empire, for Tarkin was always muttering about his new superweapon that would allow him to crush the Rebellion.

As the Grand Moff was en route from the Governor's palace on Eriodu to the completed Death Star, his ship was attacked by Rebels. Following a firefight with Admiral Moff's Star Destroyer, the Rebels escaped with Tarkin's servant, Ackbar.Pledging his aid to the Rebellion, Ackbar returned to Mon Calamari to help convince his people to support his rescuers. Even as his people began making and designing new weapons and assault ships for the Alliance, Ackbar was looking for even more ways to get involved. With their salmon-coloured skin, webbed fingers, chin-tentacles, and bulbous eyes, Ackbar and his Calamari workers sometimes presented comical pictures, but their sincerity and drive convinced everyone that they represented the "spirit" of the Rebel Alliance.

Made a commander in the Alliance, Ackbar wanted to create an answer to the Empire's deadly new Nebulon-B frigate, which maintained twenty-four laser batteries, heavy shielding, and two TIE fighter squadrons, which made it more than a match for traditionally lightly armed Rebel starfighters, Ackbar went to the Roche system to deal with a renowed species of brilliant ship designers, the insectoid Verpine. Code-named Shantipole, the project would lead to the developement of an oddly shaped, two-crewed B-wing starfighter.Working with Ackbar and other Calamari, the peaceful Verpine were able to create several prototypes of the B-wing. Despite a betrayal by Slain Glek, Ackbar's Quarren lieutenant, the Empire was unable to capture the new ships. Several days after the B-wings were delivered, Ackbar was promoted to admiral by Alliance leader Mon Mothma.

Following the Battle of Yavin, the Bothans had joined the Alliance at about the same time as the Mon Calamari had. One of their leaders, Borsk Fey'lya was brought into the power structure of the emerging Alliance, but he didn't like the amphibious Mon Calamarians, and Fey'lya especially didn't like having to compete for power. For his part, though, the peaceful Ackbar did his best to ignore the Bothan, or to work with him when necessary.Shortly before the Alliance moved to establish Echo Base on Hoth, a bulk freighter in which Ackbar and several of his top technicians were traveling was struck down by Imperials. The Mon Calamari launched escape pods before their ship was destroyed, and ended up stranded on the mist-covered world of Daluuj. Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, and their droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, set out on a rescue mission to save Ackbar and his fellow Calamari before the Imperials got to them. With the help of some giant, energy-eating water-worms, the Alliance heroes all escaped Daluuj in the Millennium Falcon.Ackbar began recieving more and more responsibility from Mon Mothma. He became one of her top two advisors, and she made him the commander of the entire Rebel fleet. Although the promotion had been made entirely based on Ackbar's skills weight. The Empire had practiced racism, slavery, and genocide against non-human species; now the Alliance was not only embracing them, but allowing them positions of great power. The weight on Ackbar's shoulders was great.

When Bothan spies discovered the location of a second Death star, Ackbar and the other military tacticians developed the plans for a surprise attack on the battle station. General Han Solo would lead a strike team down to the forest moon of Endor to destroy the source of the Death Star's protective energy shields. Meanwhile, General Lando Calrissian would lead the squads of X-wing, Y-wing, A-wing, and B-wing starfighters, and Mon Calamarian battle cruisers against the battle station itself.Ackbar's plan would have worked except that the Death Star was already operational, and Solo's team was unable to immediately incapacitate the shields. Several of the Rebel command ships and frigates were destroyed, while the Alliance fighter ships had to deal with the Imperial TIEs and Star Destroyers.Ackbar ordered a withdrawal, but General Calrissian talked him into taking the battle closer and destroying the Star Destroyers. Both fervently hoped that Solo's team would succeed down on Endor. A bloody and destructive battle followed, but finally, the Alliance ships were victorious. Wedge Antilles and Lando Calrissian helped destroy the second Death Star, with Emperor Palpatine on board.

The Empire was severly crippled, but not dead. The day after destroying the second Death Star, Wedge Antilles captured an Imperial drone ship carrying a plea for assistance from Bakuran system. Admiral Ackbar and Mon Mothma agreed to dispense a strike team to go to the aid of Bakura, which was under attack by the reptilian Ssi-ruuk. Ackbar put Luke in command of a team of five Corellian gunships, Wedge Antilles's Rogue squadron of X-wings, and a corvette. The Rebels were victorious at Bakura, and over the years they would aid other planets in need and make many successful attacks on the survivors of the Empire. Ackbar preffered to personally lead important assaults, but this was gradually overtaken by his need to plan defense procedures, and by his responsibilities to the New Republic. He was named commander-in-chief of all New Republic military operations, and he served on the Provisional Council and the ruling Inner Council of the New Republic, helping to forge the new galactic government. Fey'lya's rivalry with Ackbar continued unabated, and meetings of the Councils were often taken up by the debates between the two.The Alliance established a number of new headquarters prior to setting on a permanent residence. These included bases on the moon of Endor and the forest planet of Arbra.

After the battles against the mad Jedi clone Joruus C'Baoth and equally mad clones of Emperor Palpatine, Leia and Han realized the danger to which their young, Force-powerful children would be exposed if they remained at any of the Rebel bases. If someone using the dark side of the force came near the children, the offspring could be warped permanently.Admiral Ackbar and Luke scouted out a faraway world called Anoth, which could support life. A heavily guarded facility was constructed in which the woman known as Winter would teach the Solo children and take care of them. No one except Luke, Ackbar, and Winter knew Anoth's location.

Unknown to Ackbar, his chief starship mechanic, a Mon Calamari named Terpfen, was secretly a spy. Terpfen had been tortured by the Imperials, and organic circuitry had been placed into his brain, forcing him to spy for them. He reported to Caridian Imperial Ambassador Furgan.Terpfen was told to sabatage Ackbar's own modified B-wing fighter. Ackbar took Leia to the windy planet of Vartex, where she planned to meet with the winged Vors. His B-wing malfunctioned and Ackbar crashed the ship into the towering, crystalline Cathedral of the Winds. The Vors' greatest artistic treasure was destroyed, and Ackbar held himself responsible.Back on Coruscant, Ackbar faced the Council. Terpfen had found nothing wrong with the ship's system, so the blunder was blamed on Ackbar's piloting error. Ackbar resigned his commision, and left for a quiet retirement on Mon Calamari. He made a quick stop on Anoth to see Winter, not realizing that Terpfen had tracked his ship to betray the planet's location to Furgan. Ackbar returned to Mon Calamari, and promtly disappeared, sequestering himself in a small dwelling in the seatree thickets under the water, where he had lived when he was younger. There he began using his technical knowledge to mesure the tetonic disturbances in Mon Calamari's crust.

A short time later, when Admiral Daala attacked the floating cities with her Star Destroyers, Ackbar was called upon to help protect his planet for the third time. His quick thinking and strong tactics saved the day. He used a partially constructed ship, the Startide, as a battering ram, driving the ship and spacedock into the Star Destroyer Manticore. Daala's two remaining ships withdrew as Rebel battleships responded to the attack on Mon Calamari. Despite the recognition of his heroism, Ackbar still chose to remain on his home planet, to help strengthen its defense.Weeks later, everything changed. Terpfen had overridden his programming and confessed his hand in the sabotage of Ackbar's ship and betrayal of Anoth's location. Ackbar, Leia, and Terpfen arrived on Anoth in time to help Winter stop Furgan and his forces from kidnapping the infan Anakin Solo. Ackbar was also able to stop Terpfen before he could kill himself over his betrayals.

Ackbar returned to Coruscant and regained his rank. He also brought the Mon Calamari healer Clighal to help heat the dying Mon Mothma. A short time later, Admiral Ackbar asked Winter to accompany him to the planet Vortex for the reopening of the Cathedral of the Winds. She expressed her happiness that Ackbar had returned to the Alliance. Since the Solo childrenm had been returned to Coruscant, he in turn, expressed his own pleasure that Winter would no longer be exiled on Anoth.Ackbar and the white-haired beauty would enjoy each others' company a lot over the coming years, both in their tasks for building the New Republic, and in private. With many more missions and successes in his future, Admiral Ackbar would go down in history as one of the greatest military leaders.

Luke Skywalker

Luke Skywalker is the Tatooine farm boy who went on to become a Rebel hero and Jedi Knight. He was raised by Owen and Beru Lars, who he believed were his uncle and aunt. During his eighteenth year, as boredom and the need to finally leave the desert planet were suffocating him, he saw signs of a space battle in the skies over Tatooine. He did not know it at the time, but this was more than a real engagement happening in Tatooine's orbit - it was a sign that his whole life was about to change, and that the destiny he was born to fulfill was ready to begin.

When Luke's Uncle Owen purchased a pair of droids from a group of Jawa merchants, Luke became wrapped up in the smaller droid's quest. For little R2-D2 had come to Tatooine to locate Obi-Wan Kenobi and present him with an important message. That message propelled Luke Skywalker on a journey to rescue Princess Leia and learn the skills of the Jedi Knights. Obi-Wan, whom Luke knew as Old Ben, explained that Luke's father had been a Jedi Knight who had been betrayed and murdered by Kenobi's student, Darth Vader. He gave Luke his father's lightsaber, promising to teach the young man the ways of the Force.

Unfortunately, the Empire was meanwhile searching for the pair of droids. Stormtroopers tracked the droids to the Jawas and from them to Owen and Beru Lars, killing them all in their desire to leave no witnesses behind. With the help of Han Solo and Chewbacca the Wookiee, Luke, Obi-Wan, and the droids escaped from Tatooine and eventually rescued Princess Leia from the Death Star, although Obi-Wan was killed by Darth Vader during the campaign. But the Force was strong in Luke Skywalker, and he fired the shot that destroyed the Death Star to end the Battle of Yavin.

Over the next three years, Luke became a prominent member of the Rebel Alliance. He achieved the rank of commander and took charge of the X-wing squadron known as Rogue Squadron. While on Hoth, Luke was led by a vision of Obi-Wan Kenobi to the swamp planet Dagobah, where he was to find a Jedi Master named Yoda to complete his training. Luke learned much from the wizened old Yoda, but he cut his training short to help his friends at Cloud City. This was the site of Luke's first confrontation with Darth Vader. He lost three things in this meeting, and almost lost a fourth - his life. Vader sliced off Luke's right hand, sending it and his lightsaber heirloom into the bowels of Cloud City. Then Luke lost his innocence, for Vader told him that Kenobi had lied: Vader had not killed Luke's father. He was Luke's father. With the help of Princess Leia and Lando Calrissian, Luke barely escaped with his life.

After being fitted for a prosthetic hand, Luke traveled to Tatooine to rescue Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt. When Jabba refused to simply hand over Solo and let them all go free, Luke was forced to destroy the crime lord and his entire operation. He then returned to Dagobah to finish his training and discover the truth of Vader's words. But he found a dying Yoda, who confirmed his worst fears and explained that his training was complete. All he had to do to become a full Jedi was to confront Vader a second time. He also learned, from Ben Kenobi's spirit form, that Leia was his sister - another Skywalker strong in the Force, kept hidden to one day battle against the Emperor. At Endor, Luke decided to meet Vader, not in battle, but to free the good in him and return his father Anakin from the dark side. Even as the Emperor worked to corrupt Luke, Luke managed to reach the small spark of good buried deep within the darkness and armor of Vader, and Anakin Skywalker re-emerged. Anakin then killed the Emperor and sacrificed his own life to save his son. Luke returned to his friends and family as the Galactic Civil War came to an end.

Lando Calrissian

Lando Calrissian, soldier-of-fortune and master gambler, turned "respectable" after winning stewardship of Bespin's Cloud City in a game of sabacc. As Baron Administrator of Cloud City and its Tibanna-gas mining operation, he proved to be adept at keeping the outpost on an even keel and turning a handsome profit. In fact, things were going so well that Calrissian should have realized his luck was about to change. Imperial forces under the command of Lord Darth Vader arrived at Cloud City and "persuaded" Calrissian to assist them. The Dark Lord made Lando an offer he could not refuse - a deal to keep the Empire out of Bespin system forever. All Lando had to do was betray his old friend, associate, and sometime-rival Han Solo. After escaping from Imperial forces in the Hoth system, Han Solo brought his damaged Millennium Falcon to Cloud City for repairs. Lando, who once owned the Falcon until he lost it to Solo in a sabacc game, welcomed Solo and his companions to the facility, promising to get his techs right to work on the Falcon's troublesome hyperdrive. While he played the cordial and dashing host, Lando was setting Solo up for a fall - though the fall that came was not the one Lando had agreed to. He went along with Vader because the Dark Lord had claimed to be after someone named Skywalker. Solo, Leia, Chewbacca, and C-3PO were nothing more than bait, the Dark Lord had claimed, explaining that after the trap had been sprung, the four could remain on Bespin. The Empire's promise to leave Cloud City to its own devices and the large number of heavily armed stormtroopers at Vader's side had convinced Lando to go along with the deal. When he discovered that Vader was changing the terms to suit his own purposes and that his beloved Cloud City was about to become an armed camp, Lando finally decided to help Han. He ordered the evacuation of Cloud City, but was too late to rescue Han Solo from the bounty hunter Boba Fett. Instead, he helped Leia and Chewbacca escape in the Falcon, and even managed to help save Luke Skywalker from the very bottom of the floating city.Later, Lando took part in the mission to rescue Han Solo from the clutches of Jabba the Hutt. His role in that mission was one of deceit, for he disguised himself as one of Jabba's guards and worked his way into Jabba's court so that he could watch, listen, and wait for an opportunity to make a move. After saving Solo and helping to destroy Jabba the Hutt, Lando decided to take a commission in the Rebel Alliance. Due to his reputation as a soldier-of-fortune, especially for his role in the Battle of Taanab, Lando was given the rank of general. He then volunteered to lead the starfighter assault on the second Death Star, a job that was made much easier by Solo's generous offer of the Millennium Falcon. At the helm of the Falcon, Lando's daring, expertise, and quick thinking were pivotal in the great space battle that took place above Endor's forest moon. In fact, he accompanied Wedge Antilles on the run to destroy the Death Star's power core. In the end, Lando was decorated as a hero alongside Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia.

C-3PO

C-3PO is a protocol droid with specialized programming in droid/human relations and language translation and interpretation. He is bipedal, with a gold-colored body. Among Threepio's standard equipment are visual, auditory, olfactory, and sensory receptors, a broadband antenna for receiving droid transmissions, and a speech vocabulator. He is fluent in over six million galactic languages. Design specifications for this model droid call for limited creativity circuits to keep embellishment to a minimum. Over the long period since C-3PO's last memory wipe (if he ever even had one), he has apparently developed a talent for telling stories, as evidenced by his dramatic re-creation of the events of the galactic civil war for the Ewoks of Endor's forest moon. C-3PO claimed that he and his counterpart, R2-D2, were the property of Captain Antilles when they first met Luke Skywalker, though the protocol droid readily accepted Luke as his new master. He even claimed not to have ever heard of Princess Leia, though this seems unlikely. Since meeting up with Luke, C-3PO has shared many adventures with the Heroes of Yavin. He tends to stay close to Princess Leia when Luke is away.

R2-D2

The astromech droid R2-D2 (or Artoo-Detoo) hooked up with Luke Skywalker at the beginning of the events that led to the Battle of Yavin and has been at his side ever since. Like other astromech droids, R2-D2 is a starship utility droid. His domed head can rotate a full three hundred and sixty degrees, and his short, squat, cylindrical body is full of instruments, sensors, and devices designed to help him perform his primary functions. R2-D2 stands upright on two legs that end in treaded rollers. A third leg drops from a compartment in his lower body to provide him with added stability when moving across irregular terrain.

Artoo-Detoo and his counterpart, See-Threepio (C-3PO), were aboard Princess Leia's consular ship when it was overtaken and boarded by Imperial forces. The Princess placed the technical readouts for the Death Star in Artoo's memory banks, then ordered the little droid to find Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since that time, Artoo has served as Luke's companion and aide, assisting from his socket in Luke's X-wing, accompanying him to Dagobah, and helping to save the day on Endor's forest moon. Artoo understands Basic, but communicates in his own expressive language of beeps and whistles, which Threepio must often translate for their human (and Wookiee) companions.
